Reasoning transparency workshop

Length: 1.5 hours

Location: This is an interactive online workshop run on Zoom and Miro.

Cost: Free. We think reasoning transparency is one of the most important skills to develop if you want to improve the world with your research, and we don't want cost to be a barrier for anyone.

Places: We only have 20 places available on each of these workshops, so we recommend you apply early!

What is reasoning transparency?

This workshop is based on the concept of reasoning transparency described in this blog post. Researchers we surveyed selected reasoning transparency as one of the most important research skills needed for doing impactful research, but reasoning transparency is usually not taught at universities, so we're offering a free workshop to help you develop this skill!

When you present your research transparently, others can see the process, knowledge and interpretations that led you to your conclusions. This is important if you want to do research that others can trust to inform their decisions and understanding of the world. It makes it easier for others to build on your work, work out whether they agree with your conclusions, and benefit from your research even if they disagree with a step in your reasoning process.

After this workshop, you will:

  • have a deeper understanding of why reasoning transparency is important in research.
  • be able to describe concrete examples of good reasoning transparency.
  • have gained experience with improving reasoning transparency in your own research.
  • have an accountability partner to exchange feedback with on the reasoning transparency in your research.

Who is this workshop for?

Anyone doing research is welcome to apply, whether you’re at undergrad, Masters', PhD level or beyond. It's an introductory workshop, so will likely be most valuable for people who haven't learned about reasoning transparency before. However, as there are opportunities during the workshop to apply the learning to a project you're working on, it will be useful even if you already know what reasoning transparency is.

The perfect timing to attend is in the middle or towards the end of your research process, as this enables you to apply the exercises to your work directly. However, it is always useful to learn about Reasoning Transparency, so please feel free to apply if you are at an earlier stage of the process. If this is the case, please bring an old research project or a paper you are very familiar with and make sure you read it again prior to the workshop.

Who runs the workshop?
